Roger Avary co-wrote Pulp Fiction (1994) with Quentin Tarantino, and his debut feature as a director deals with many of the same themes.

Eric Stoltz is Zed, a safecracker visiting his old friend Eric (Jean-Hugues Anglade) in Paris who, before you can say Reservoir Dogs, attempts to hold up a bank while high on booze and drugs.

Avary gives his predictable heist tale a fresher edge than normal with some neat camerawork and a smattering of good jokes among the unflinching splatter.

It’s still warmed-over Tarantino at best, though Julie Delpy adds a nice twist as a good-hearted prostitute.
