Wendy Craig's newly-widowed
scatter-brained, harassed mother Sally Harrison in And Mother
Makes Three and her role as Ria Parkinson in Carla Lane's
Butterflies were essentially extensions of the same
character. Only the members of the families and the details of the
kitchen decor changed.
Craig played the role of Sally Harrison a widow faced with the
everyday tribulations of raising two well-meaning but nonetheless
troublesome children, a cat and a goldfish, 'helped' by her aunt
(Valerie Lush), all while enjoying some occasional male interest and
holding down a job as assistant to a vet (Mr Campbell). Sally endured
a constant series of domestic dilemmas in this series written by
Richard Waring.
The series was later re-titled And
Mother Makes Five after Sally married father-of-one widower and
antiquarian bookseller David Redway. The domestic scope of the new
series was much the same, with Wendy Craig as harassed as before and
the children growing older but remaining as wholesomely brattish as
before.
