Bergerac

1 9 8 1 - 1 9 9 1 (UK)
87 x 50 minute episodes

Considering the island of Jersey is only 4 miles across there was plenty of crime to keep old Detective Sergeant Jim Bergerac busy! John Nettles played the title role as a divorced, recovering alcoholic, injured in-the-line-of-duty policeman, who helped maintain law and order working for the Bureau des Etrangers on the millionaire's playground.

Viewers warmed slowly to Bergerac as he buzzed around the coastal roads in his vintage sports car, supported by veteran character actor Terence Alexander, as his former father-in-law Charlie Hungerford (a gruff, self-made Yorkshire millionaire) and former Howard's Way star Deborah Grant as his ex-wife, Deborah.

Other regular characters included season one girlfriend Francine Leland, Bergerac's long suffering superior officer Barney Crozier, Jim's teen-aged daughter, Kim.

Bergerac also often skirted the wrong side of the law as he dallied with beautiful jewel thief Philippa Vale (Liza Goddard).

Jim ultimately retired from the police force and moved to Provence to become a Private Investigator. He also acquired a new girlfriend in Danielle Aubry (French actress Therese Liotard).
