Young Vietnamese refugee Dinh (Ho Nguyen) arrives in the small Texan shrimp-fishing community of Port Alamo to find work. But resentment from the locals is high, especially from the embittered Vietnam vet Shang Pierce (Ed Harris) whose life is falling apart.
The tension escalates into violent conflict when Shang’s courageous lover Glory (Amy Madigan) befriends the immigrant – her father (Donald Moffat) is the man who rents the boats to the Vietnamese.
Native fishermen, encouraged by the Ku Klux Klan, turn violent when confronted with competition from hard-working emigres who only want their own piece of the American dream.
Madigan stands out as the on-again, off-again girlfriend (and real-life wife) of chief racist thug Harris, in this new variation on an old story.
French director Louis Malle made a better study of racism in his acclaimed 1987 film Au Revoir les Enfants.
