Boston’s one-time underground newspaper The Back Bay Mainline is losing its excitement on the way to making a profit. The radical flavour is disappearing and big business is interested in a takeover.
The effect is devastating for the young and dedicated journalists and hangers-on who have committed so much of their lives to the paper and to each other.
The perceptive humour comes from the last bastion of 1960s political radicalism taking on corporate thinking, coupled with a brilliant ensemble cast milking every moment for wit and poignancy.
The ad-libbed music lecture from rock critic Max (Jeff Goldblum) is a hoot while the feminist rapport between photographer Abbie (Lindsay Crouse) and stripper Danielle (Marilu Henner) is another highlight.
Utterly engrossing and believable, this is a spirited satire full of real people involved in real situations.
