This sequel to On Moonlight Bay (1951) reunited most of the original cast and presented the trials and tribulations of the Winfield family in small-town Indiana as Bill Sherman (Gordon MacRae) returns to his girl, Marjorie Winfield (Doris Day) having served in the Army during World War I.
Billy Gray steals many scenes as Marjorie’s 12-year-old brat brother, Wesley – who has a pet turkey called Gregory and who creates a complex of imaginary scandals that dominates the last half of the film – and Mary Wickes features again as the comically acerbic family maid and cook, Stella.
Like On Moonlight Bay the story is very slight but the film is visually captivating in rich Technicolor with lavish production design, beautiful scenery and memorable songs.
Listen carefully for the announcer at the ice skating pond near the end of the film – that’s the voice of Merv Griffin.
