This charming British comedy presents the interweaving stories of seven London households caught up in a property chain on their moving day, each one dependent on the other.
Warren Mitchell stars as Bamber, the veteran lead removal man for Last Removals, a big-hearted know-it-all and amateur philosopher who dispenses his wisdom to those moving home – hence the nickname “Bamber”, a reference to Bamber Gascoigne, the question master on University Challenge.
His rag-tag removal crew include Tornado (Gary Waldhorn), Nick (Bernard Hill), and Paul (Tony Westrope).
The families moving successively into each other’s dwellings (from a terrace in unsmart Hackney to Tufnell Park, Willesden, Hammersmith, Hampstead and Holland Park to a mansion in upmarket Knightsbridge – and back to Hackney) include a pompous but miserly couple doing everything on the cheap (Nigel Hawthorne and Anna Massey), a young couple just starting their future together (Denis Lawson and Rita Wolf), a widowed Greek Cypriot lady longing for her Mediterranean home (Billie Whitelaw), and an elderly millionaire with an incurable disease who’s decided to go back to his roots (Leo McKern).
Blockbusters host Bob Holness can be heard as the breakfast radio announcer.
Writer Jack Rosenthal later adapted his screenplay into a TV series – Moving Story – which aired on ITV in 1994 and 1995 with Warren Clarke as Bamber.
