Francis Ford Coppola directed this 1974 film starring Gene Hackman as lonely, paranoid surveillance expert Harry Caul – a wiretapper and industrial spy for hire.
Following a particularly difficult surveillance job in San Francisco, he believes a young couple he has recorded are about to be murdered.
Gradually Caul becomes embroiled in a mystery even more complex and dangerous than he anticipates.
It’s essentially a very obscure rip-off of Antonioni’s Blow-Up (1966) but sound, superb performances from Hackman and John Cazale no doubt helped this intriguing post-Watergate thriller win the Grand Prix at the 1974 Cannes Festival.
