The third Die Hard film became the highest grossing American film of 1995 and re-established the action franchise’s reputation for excellence.
In the midst of a hot, sweaty summer in New York City, John McClane (Bruce Willis) – now in the throes of alcoholism – has been suspended from the NYPD.
But when a bomb goes off in the Bonwit Teller Department Store, a man named ‘Simon’ (Jeremy Irons) calls the police department and asks for McClane, informing Inspector Walter Cobb (Larry Bryggman) that McClane is going to play a game called “Simon Says”.
McClane must follow the tasks Simon assigns to him or else another bomb will be detonated somewhere in New York.
With the help of Harlem electrician Zeus Carver (Samuel L. Jackson), McClane races frantically all over New York trying to solve the frustrating puzzles set for him, by the crafty terrorist.
When a bomb goes off in a subway station in downtown Manhattan right by the Federal Gold Reserve (the biggest gold storage in the world) things start to get heated.
John eventually learns the truth – that Simon is actually Peter Gruber, the brother of Nakatomi terrorist Hans Gruber.
A key scene in the movie required McLane to parade around the predominantly African-American Harlem district of New York wearing a sandwich board proclaiming ‘I hate niggers’ (he is forced to do so by the villain).
However, even with security precautions, it was deemed too dangerous to have Bruce Willis actually do this. Instead, the board he actually wore was blank and the wording was digitally added afterwards.
