This bizarre spoof of the Robert Louis Stevenson classic stars Oliver Reed in the dual roles of ugly but kindly podiatrist Dr Henry Heckyl and his handsome but nasty alter ego, Mr Hype.
Everyone is cruel to Dr Heckyl and abuses him because he is so deformed – almost monster-like – which drives him to the point where he can no longer live with his ugliness and he decides to commit suicide and destroy his own ugliness once and for all.
The potion he chooses to end his life does not have the desired effect, however. Instead, it turns him into a good looking and charming (but cruel) fellow and he becomes “Mr Hype”. Obsessed with his own beauty, the murderous Hype destroys anyone who doesn’t find him as beautiful as he believes himself to be.
Reed’s shenanigans are abetted by a cast of equally rambunctious fools, including veteran Jackie Coogan as Sgt, Fleacollar, the desk sergeant in a medieval dungeon of a jail; Virgil Frye as Lt. MacDruck (aka “Il Topo”), a literally flat-footed flatfoot; and Kedrick Wolfe as a swishy fellow doctor, Dr Lew Hoo.
