Cold, ruthless and utterly professional, The Driver (Ryan O’Neal) is the best getaway man in Los Angeles. He freelances for crooks, providing his expensive services for high-speed getaways.
The Detective (Bruce Dern) is tough, determined and equally professional. And he’s determined to get his man.
In this brilliantly made minimalist thriller, O’Neal and Dern play characters on opposite sides of the law – each with a sneaking admiration for the other, and each determined to win.
Caught between them is The Player (Isabelle Adjani), a casino gambler who witnessed the Driver performing a crime but refuses to ID him for the Detective’s benefit. When these characters converge, the Detective forces a situation that puts the Driver in league with reckless thieves willing to betray anyone and everyone for the right price.
The action takes place mostly at night, and is set in evocative locations like a cavernous warehouse and LA’s iconic Union Station.
