For Pete’s Sake (1974)

Henrietta – known as “Henry” (Barbra Streisand) – is the wife of New York cab driver, Pete (Michael Sarrazin), who is trying to help her husband make some money so he can go back to school. When he gets an inside tip to invest in pork bellies, she borrows the money from a loan shark (Jack Hollander).

The market goes down, not up, and Henry finds her “contract” being sold at an escalating rate of interest first to a Madame who supplies housewives to entertain businessmen, then to a couple of underworld hoods, and finally to a castle rustler.

Although the script falters from time to time, there are plenty of chuckles along the way – but this is not in the class of Streisand’s The Owl and The Pussycat (1970) or What’s Up Doc? (1972).
