In 1939, test pilot Daniel McCormick (Mel Gibson) is checking out the brand new B-25 bomber for the newly formed Army Air Corps.
Life is sweet. He loves his job. His childhood sweetheart, Helen (Isabel Glasser) seems primed for commitment if he can scrape up enough courage to pop the question. His best friend, scientist Harry Finley (George Wendt) has frozen a live chicken in his lab and brought it back, thawed and alive. The government is interested in a hush-hush project. A man would be next, Harry confides to his friend (but to no one else).
Then, fate steps in. Helen is hit by a car and plunges into a seemingly endless coma. Daniel is inconsolable.
He begs Harry to let him be the human guinea pig. Freeze me, he pleads. For a year. Maybe by then, Helen will be all right.
But something goes wrong. Daniel wakes up in 1992. Nat (Elijah Wood) and his romantically hard-luck single mother, Claire (Jamie Lee Curtis) take him in as a kind of hunky E.T. and try to help him adjust to modern times.
Forever Young is simple, sentimental and derivative. But if you’re a sucker for well-done mush, go have yourself a good time. You might need a hankie or two.
The lighthouse featured in the film is the Point Arena Lighthouse, near Manchester, California. The house in the film was a shell built by the production team and torn down after filming.
