Ron (Jon Blake) is an unemployed young man in 1980s Australia, with poor prospects but rich fantasies. On a whim, he steals a silver Porsche 930 Turbo, hooks up with unmarried teenage mother Sally (Jad Capelja) and hits the road looking for freedom.
Soon the young couple become fugitives on the run, evading the police, trying to get Sally’s baby back, and generally creating car-related chaos on the highways of Australia.
The film was produced by the South Australian Film Corporation. The soundtrack was composed and produced by Don Walker of the Australian band Cold Chisel and features the (then-unknown) singer Michael Hutchence of INXS.
Former Puberty Blues (1981) star Jad Capelja did not make any other films after appearing in Freedom. She later struggled with addiction and was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. Capelja took her own life on 10 January 2010.
