Anxiously awaiting a divorce from her husband, beautiful Janet Lagerlof (Romy Schneider) is suddenly plunged into a complex situation when she learns that she will inherit $15 million from her grandfather’s estate – provided she is happily married and living with her husband!
Undaunted, she calls in her “good neighbour Sam” (Jack Lemmon) after bribing his wife, Minerva (Dorothy Provine) with the promise of a million dollars and persuades him to pose as her husband.
Sam – a wholesome family man – moves in just in time, because two of Janet’s cousins – who will inherit the money if they can prove she is not living with her husband – employ a private detective (Louis Nye) to snoop around.
When Janet’s husband Howard (Mike Connors) arrives on the scene unexpectedly, he is persuaded to move in with Sam’s wife to keep up the facade.
Worse is to come, though. Sam has just been promoted by his advertising company (Burke & Hare) and now handles the firm’s most important account – the Nurdlinger Dairy company – and Mr Nurdlinger (Edward G. Robinson) – also a wholesome family man – regards Janet and Sam as an ideal married couple and pastes their photograph on billboards all over town.
