Paula McFadden (Marsha Mason), a twice-deserted single mother and ex-dancer with a 10-year-old daughter, seems fated to be the ‘goodbye girl’ whom lovers find easy to leave.

Out of necessity, Paula agrees to share it with the new tenant, bohemian oddball actor Elliot Garfield (Richard Dreyfuss in an Academy Award-winning Best Actor performance) – but strictly on the understanding that their paths cross as infrequently as possible.
Barbs fly in typical Neil Simon fashion, but somewhere along the way an old-fashioned, teary-eyed romance manages to shine through.
