Great Mouse Detective, The (1986)

Set in 1897 and based on the Basil of Baker Street series of books by Eve Titus, this animated Disney film tells the story of Olivia (voiced by Susanne Pollatschek), a little girl mouse whose father, toymaker Hiram Flaversham (Alan Young), has been kidnapped for a nefarious purpose by the evil Professor Ratigan (voiced by Vincent Price) – a rat who prefers to think of himself as a large mouse.

Olivia seeks help from the great mouse detective Basil (voiced by Barrie Ingham), who lives underneath the floor of 221B Baker Street in London – the same house as Sherlock Holmes.

And so, aided by his faithful but befuddled associate Dr Dawson (Val Bettin), Basil sets out to help the girl rescue her father from his arch-enemy Ratigan and his evil gang, which includes a peg-legged broken-winged bat named Fidget (Candy Candido).

Pompous and gleefully energetic, Basil isn’t equal to Sherlock Holmes, but knows every seedy backwater from Bow to Buckingham Palace and is ready for any hair-raising confrontation atop the clock tower of Big Ben.
