Billy Peltzer (Zach Galligan) and his fiancée Kate Beringer (Phoebe Cates) have moved to New York from Kingston Falls after surviving the first nightmarish wave of gremlins.
Both now work at the Clamp Centre, the high-tech Manhattan skyscraper of Daniel Clamp (a spoof of the Donald Trump “empire”), where – coincidentally – their old Mogwai pal Gizmo is the prisoner of an evil mad geneticist named Dr Catheter (Christopher Lee), who runs the Splice O’Life “designer genes” laboratory.
Kate is a guide in a tailored mini-suit with a hat topped by a tower; Billy is an artist-designer working on conceptual renderings of the new ‘Camp Shangrila’ in Chinatown.
Billy eventually rescues Gizmo, but the cute little furball sprouts his first embryonic green dragons after taking an unwanted bath . . . and the Gremlins are off to run amok.
With Steven Spielberg’s influence seemingly absent, Joe Dante’s anarchic view of life is given full rein in this chaotic but cracking sequel.
As with the original, Dante bombards the screen with a never-ending stream of movie spoofs, slapstick violence and sly little treats for film buffs.
Zach Galligan, whose face has grown plump in the six years since he first played Billy, and Phoebe Cates, who looks chunky in Kate’s Girl Guide outfits, are charged respectively with battling the living gargoyles and suffering their chattering, chortling assaults.
But most of the laughs come from the supporting players. The elegant Christopher Lee remains wittily above it all, and Robert Prosky seems to relish the role of Grandpa Fred, a vampiric TV horror host.
