During the Second World War, American Pilot David Halloran (Harrison Ford), who is stationed in England, meets young British nurse Margaret Sellinger (Lesley-Anne Down) during an air raid on London.
The two instantly fall in love, despite the fact that Margaret is already married; a secret she keeps hidden from David.
After being shot down behind enemy lines while being assigned to ferry a British agent into France, David discovers that his secret agent cargo is, in fact, his lover’s husband, Paul Sellinger (Christopher Plummer) and that the two must now work together in order to survive.
Richard Masur steals every scene in which he appears as flippant coward Jerry Cimino who serves as David’s bombardier.
The film utilised five actual North American B-25s Mitchell bomber planes which were flown over to England from the United States of America especially for the production of this movie.
Most of the flying scenes were filmed at the disused airfield at RAF Bovingdon in Hertfordshire. The final motorbike jump in the film was performed by stunt rider Eddie Kidd.
