Science fiction, sword-and-sorcery, violence, sex, drug culture and humour all featured in varying degrees in Heavy Metal, an animated feature that took its title from the adult fantasy magazine of the same name.
An astronaut takes home a glowing green orb for his daughter but the orb kills him and traps the girl.
Claiming to be the personification of all evil, the malevolent sphere – known as the Loc-Nar – frightens the little girl by showing her a number of weird and fantastic stories it has influenced.
Of the six segments that comprised the film, one involving an un-heroic cab driver in a futuristic New York, and another in which a young bookworm is transformed into an inter-galactic stud, were the best.
The others, including an alien-type yarn of doomed B-17 pilots, a comedy Hulk-style send-up, and a fantasy in which a Pentagon secretary is abducted by a flying saucer, had less of an edge to them but benefited from some striking animation.
The voices for the animation included those of Harold Ramis, John Candy and Eugene Levy.
