Harry England (Michael Crawford), once a mechanic and now an easy-going and carefree car salesman, has one great passion in life – motor cars.
At a petrol station on the French Riviera, his eye is caught by a vintage Rolls-Royce which has broken down.
An attractive young French woman named Dany (Geneviève Gilles) asks Harry for a lift to Paris, to which he reluctantly agrees. He becomes fond of her and gives her the same loving care he gives his cars.
Dany is married to Baron de Choisis (Curt Jurgens), who is wealthy and twice her age, and he tolerates her affairs.
The Baron employs Harry to look after his collection of vintage cars, which enables Harry to see a great deal of Dany. The suave Baron is well aware of the goings-on but does nothing.
Harry asks Dany to leave the Baron, but she refuses. And so he gets drunk and drives a vintage Rolls into the swimming pool.
Months later, Harry returns to Cannes and learns that Dany and the Baron have split up, and Dany is at Le Havre, about to go to America. He drives flat out across France to catch her.
Newcomer Geneviève Gilles – a former model for Yves St Laurent – can steal scenes by opening her shirt. She’s far less effective when she opens her mouth. Michael Crawford, meanwhile, has as much business playing a romantic lead as Stan Laurel.
