Happily married award-winning photographer Grif Henderson (James Garner) and his wife Jenny (Debbie Reynolds) enjoy making love. But when Grif takes an assignment to cover a girls’ summer tour of Europe for a magazine, they hit several snags which prevent them from being together as much as they like.
Jenny conspires to get Grif the photographic assignment after their teenage son, Davey (Donald Losby) has complained about his girlfriend, “Bootsie” (Hilarie Thompson) going on the tour and being away from him for a month.
Before they go, Jenny – who has managed to get herself on the trip too – arranged to rent a villa on the French Riviera from unscrupulous real estate man Gilbert Tilly (Terry-Thoams).
On board the ship, Grif and Jenny are kept apart by strict regulations and their efforts to get together lend to some of the funnier moments in the film.
When Jenny arrives at the villa she has “rented” she mistakes the handsome owner, Phillipe (Maurice Ronet) for one of the servants.
Being a wolf, he goes along with this kooky American dame who has obviously been hoodwinked by Tilly.
Meanwhile, Grif has gone on with the tour and when Jenny goes to see him in San Romano, they have a brief interlude, and when they part, Grif says to her, “Goodbye old girl”. This annoys Jenny and she storms back to the villa and decides to play along with Phillipe.
Grif gets to know about this and tears across the country to get her back and the fun continues – via a fight in a French restaurant, a spell in jail for stealing a bus, and an Italian house of ill-repute – to a happy ending.
