Released in the UK as plain old Monster, this is a surprisingly gruelling affair in which monsters from the ocean floor surface in the seaside fishing community of Noyo, kill the men, rape the women, and generally wreak havoc.
Ann Turkel is Dr Susan Drake, an attractive scientist who joins forces with two-fisted fisherman Jim Hill (Doug McClure) to destroy the horny devils.
Vic Morrow portrays Hank, an important man in the community who is supporting the establishment of a new salmon cannery in the town bringing jobs and an economic boost.
Hank’s Native American rival Johnny Eagle (Anthony Pena) doesn’t want the cannery anywhere near the land of his people.
The film is action-packed throughout, with the creatures invading the town carnival in the finale.
This is an X-rated antidote to the old fashioned horror movies where the monster carried off the girl with a vague purpose that was never shown.
There are elements of black humour, but that won’t stop some people from finding it offensive.
Rumour has it that producer Roger Corman added the sex scenes and additional nudity after the movie was finished.
Director Barbara Peeters (unsurprisingly) refused to shoot the scenes so Corman hired Jimmy T Murakami to shoot the additional scenes.
There was a toned-down TV movie remake in 1996.
