Beaty (Helen Mirren) is a high-class prostitute working as a “hostess” at a Soho (London) nightclub where handsome American Emory (John Shea) is a technician who works the lights for the stage show.
Despite her job, his lack of money, and their pasts, the two move in together and begin an affair.
Alex Denham (Paul Angelis) – her abusive former lover and the father of her ten-year-old son, Billy – turns up fresh out of prison needing a place to stay and moves in with them.
Alex is clearly a psychopath who threatens Beaty and Emory’s future plans to buy an antique shop and move to the country.
Emory’s shady friend, Max (Murray Salem), also shows up with a scheme for making lots of money and gets the American involved in a drug-smuggling venture.
The small-budget film jogs along in a competent fashion but never really gets into its stride as a tasty thriller. The movie ends on an unexpectedly upbeat note that offers some relief from the grim proceedings that precede the resolution.
