Peggy Mount and David Kossof reprised their popular television roles of Ada and Alf Larkins in this feature film.
After 25 years working at Belcher’s Brewery, Londoner Alf Larkin (David Kossoff) is given an ailing village pub to manage. But the Earl Osbourne is in trouble, mostly because the current Lord Osbourne himself (Glyn Owen) has a tradition of giving his own very quaffable beer away absolutely free once a quarter.
The plot is thin, and consists of Ada coming up with various tricks to induce tourists and locals into her pub.
Meanwhile, rival brewery representative Harold Gaskin (Alan Wheatley) tries to trick John Belcher (Leslie Phillips) into selling the pub as a motorway is about to be built in the vicinity, which will elevate the insignificant watering hole to the status of a service station goldmine.
For no apparent reason, there is the obligatory gorgeous French girl, Yvette Dupres (Yvonne Monlaur), staying at this pub in the middle of nowhere. Esma Cannon and Irene Handl are in top form as the gossipy ladies in the village shop.
Shaun O’Riordan and Ronan O’Casey reprise their roles from The Larkins TV series as Ada and Alf’s son, Eddie, and Canadian son-in-law, Jeff Rogers, respectively.
