At an isolated inn in Gippsland, Victoria (Australia), elderly Austrian owners Caroline (Dame Judith Anderson) and Lazar Straulle (Joseph Fürst) are killing off anyone who stays with them in retribution for the abduction and murder of their two children.
Local man, Biscayne (Robert Quilter), is also wanted for murder and is being pursued by a highly resourceful American bounty hunter called Alex Cord (Paul Melford).
John Meillon, as a petty thief, makes the most of his kindly, comic part but disappears from the film too soon.
Young Class of ’74 star Carla Hoogeveen appears nude in an unrelated lesbian scene, which seems to have been added more for titillation than any real story development.
With a budget of AUD $417,000, Inn of the Damned was the most expensive Australian film ever made at that time. Essentially a gothic horror movie set in 1890s Australia – complete with horse chases, stagecoaches and spurs aplenty – it’s still a bona fide thriller that delivers well-timed shocks and some ghastly make-up effects.
Although set in Gippsland, Victoria, the movie was actually filmed on location around Camden and Bringelly in New South Wales.
