Gladys Glover (Judy Holliday) has just lost her job modelling girdles when she meets filmmaker Pete Sheppard (Jack Lemmon in his feature film debut) shooting a documentary in New York’s Central Park.
For Pete, it’s love at first sight, but Gladys has her mind on making a name for herself.
She rents a billboard on Columbus Circle and plasters her name on it in 6-foot letters – and suddenly all of New York is clamouring for Gladys without knowing why.
Enter advertising exec and playboy Evan Adams III (Peter Lawford) – who wants the billboard for a new soap advertisement – who makes a play for Gladys that even Pete finds hard to beat.
Making a deal with Adams in return for the Columbus Circle billboard, Gladys ends up with her name on billboards all over New York which brings her to the attention of television commentator Brod Clinton (Michael O’Shea), who ends up being her agent. Soon, she becomes famous.
