This 70s equivalent of Bridges of Madison County investigated the possibility that seagulls could do more than eat garbage and crap on your car at the seaside. What the hell was going on there?
Based on the best-selling waste of paper by Richard Bach, the J.L. Seagull phenomenon was huge at the time.
There were posters, pendants and tea-towels . . . although it was tough to decide which was more boring – the book, Hall Bartlett’s film, or Neil Diamond‘s meandering soundtrack, notably the epic ballad Be.
Bach sued the producers because he didn’t like Bartlett’s narrative tweaks. For a low-budget film that not only flopped at the box office but also received some of the most vitriolic negative reviews of the era, did Bach really envision a better talking-seagull movie?
