Director François Truffaut presents cinema’s ultimate love triangle with Jeanne Moreau as the mercurial Catherine, the woman whom best friends and writers Jules (Oskar Werner) and Jim (Henri Serre) can’t live with or without.
Beginning with bohemian life in pre-WWI Paris, segueing into trench warfare and bringing us to the cusp of WWII, Truffaut waltzes us through history, incorporating freeze frames, newsreel and voiceover narration along the way.
The only constant is the singsong rhythm of the mad trio’s revolving romance, perfectly accompanied by Georges Delerue’s score, both bursting with joi de vivre and rippled with sadness.
