Set in an industrial Lancashire town, A Kind Of Loving tells the bittersweet tale of Vic Brown (Alan Bates), a young draughtsman who falls for Ingrid (June Ritchie) – a typist who works in the same factory – gets her pregnant, and is trapped into marriage and forced to live with her protective, domineering mother (Thora Hird).
The film is sharply observed in documentary style and with plenty of salty northern dialogue.
Director John Schlesinger explores the landscape of their lives, both interior and exterior, with some sensitivity, but the feeling remains that they are representatives of a particular kind of social thinking rather than living, breathing people.
