US Air Force Lieutenant Josh Morgan (Elvis Presley) tries to convince his hillbilly cousin Jodie Tatum – who is his spitting image (yep, Elvis again) – to allow the government to build a missile base on his family’s rural land.
Most of Presley’s movie vehicles arouse the suspicion that their makers thought cheapness and speed more important than quality, but this double-trouble romantic comedy is a pleasant way to pass the time.
Plenty of gals, mistaken identities, punch-ups and forgettable tunes ensue, although many fans and critics consider it the worst film Elvis ever made (The Southerners in the film are all reduced to stereotypes who are illiterate, out of touch with civilisation, and – in the case of the women – only interested in having babies.).
The film was shot in just 16 days between October and November 1963.
Due to the tightly scheduled shooting schedule, there was no time to rehearse the scenes, so cue cards were provided for all the actors.
Elvis wasn’t used to this way of working, and at times, you can see him focusing slightly beyond the camera’s field of view.
Location shooting took place at Big Bear Lake in California. Interior scenes were filmed at the MGM Studios in Culver City.
Lance LeGault served as Elvis’s double, appearing whenever one of the two Elvis characters was shown from behind.
