Abbott and Costello Go To Mars (1953)

Having run out of exotic backgrounds on Earth, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello accidentally launch a rocket ship and think they’ve landed on Mars – when they’re actually in the middle of the New Orleans Mardi Gras. Dressed in their spacesuits the boys make quite a hit.

Meanwhile, a pair of escaped convicts seek refuge in the spaceship. They change their prison garb for spacesuits and rob a bank.

Of course, Bud and Lou are accused of the crime and the exciting chase leads back to the rocket ship and – again by accident – they make another trip, this time to Venus – not Mars – which is populated solely by former Miss Universe contestants under Mari Blanchard as Queen Allura.

Eventually, they make it back to Earth and are hailed as heroes for making the first interplanetary flight.

No matter how far they travelled, the stars’ comic inventiveness was at a standstill and this film’s tired and mechanical routines haven’t improved with age.
