Dr Tom Anderson (Lee Van Cleef) makes contact with a Venusian via his radio transmitter and guides it to Earth, unaware that the creature wants to enslave humanity and eradicate all emotions. So brainwashed has Anderson become by the alien that he plans to allow it to possess his wife, Claire (Beverly Garland) and fellow scientist Dr Paul Nelson (future Mission: Impossible star Peter Graves).
The Venusian creature cripples the planet’s electrical supply and deploys a flying bat-like creature to help it take control of human minds.
Nelson, Anderson, Claire and a small contingent of soldiers are all that stand in the invader’s way.
Unfortunately, the cucumber-like monster is truly laughable – a rubber suit created by Paul Blaisdell (which he dubbed “Beulah” – and the rigidity of the suit also renders the monster virtually immobile.
The lumbering creation with the immovable facial expression met with disdain from co-star Beverly Garland who, when she first saw it, exclaimed “That conquered the world?” and kicked the suit over.
The ridiculous monster and terrible effects notwithstanding, it’s a fun movie.
Shot in just five days, American International released the film on a double bill with The She-Creature.
