Set in 1194, King Richard the Lionheart (Patrick Holt) has been taken prisoner in Germany on his return from the Crusades and held to ransom as Prince John attempts to usurp the throne back in England.

Meanwhile, in Sherwood forest, a man is robbed and killed by masked outlaws. Believing Robin Hood (Don Taylor) to be behind the crime, the Sheriff of Nottingham (Leonard Sachs) places a high price on his head.

Robin is adamant that he and his men did not steal the trinket, but learning that it contains vital news of the King’s return that could endanger Richard’s life if in the wrong hands, agrees to help recover it.

Robin and his men eventually track down the villains behind the crime, tracing the theft back to Sir Guy Belton (David King-Wood).

Robin sneaks into Belton’s castle as a minstrel, but the knight has already discovered the hidden message and is preparing to ambush Richard as he lands on the coast. It is up to Robin and Friar Tuck (Reginald Beckwith) to save the day – and the life of the King.

Directed by Val Guest, The Men of Sherwood Forest was the first colour production by Hammer.
