    Old Mother Riley, Headmistress (1950)

This knockabout comedy interlaced with songs features Arthur Lucan in yet another dizzy dame adventure as Daphne Snowdrop Bluebell Riley.

Kitty (Kitty McShane), the daughter of garrulous old Laundry hand Mother Riley, is sacked from her job as singing teacher at the fashionable St Mildred’s School for Young Ladies.

At the same time, Old Mother Riley inherits the Black & White Laundry where she works. She immediately raises a mortgage on the business, buys the school from headmistress Miss Carruthers (Enid Hewitt) – outbidding Lady Gertrude Meersham (Ethel Royale) by sixpence – and reinstates Kitty.

However, the school’s French mistress, Mlle Leblanc (Jenny Mathot) is in league with crooks who were planning to buy the school because a planned railway branch line will go right through it.

They set fire to the school in order to buy it cheaply. But Mother Riley’s solicitor Mr Clifton Hill (C. Denier Warren) has discovered that the branch line will now go through the laundry instead.

So Old Mother Riley and Kitty sell the school to the crooks for £5,000 more than they paid for it, knowing they will also get a lot of money for the laundry.

It’s lively, disarmingly innocuous entertainment for the masses and juveniles.

The majority of the gags are obvious but the star is resourceful and the Luton Girls’ Choir is always at hand to give him and the audience a breather.
