This rare dramatic outing from the Carry On team of Gerald Thomas and Peter Rogers is a strange amalgam of The Two Mrs Carrols (1947) and Love From a Stranger (1937), which is lifted out of a rut by the sensitive playing of Barbara Shelley, Britain’s First Lady of Horror since the seat was left vacant by Barbara Steele when she moved to Italy.
Well-known London model Harriet (Shelley) marries rich gentleman farmer Captain James Random (Philip Friend), who has been acquitted of the murder of his first wife.
Everyone thinks he did it, however, and even though she likes the lovely old house in the depths of the country and his sweet and innocent daughter, Maggie (Julia Lockwood) – and though she tries to put doubt from her mind – Harriet grows increasingly more nervous and depressed.
All in all, it’s a rather tedious affair.
Barbara Shelley was admitted to hospital in December 2020 for a check-up. While she was there she contracted COVID-19 and fell ill with other underlying health conditions. She died on 3 January 2021 at the age of 88.
