    Dear Heart (1964)

Facebook Twitter Pinterest WhatsApp Reddit Email

Predictable and sentimental but nonetheless entertaining is this account of a small-town spinster no longer young who, after a trouble-strewn path to the altar, makes a match whilst in New York for a convention.

Lonely and shy Evie Jackson (Geraldine Page) comes to the big city for a postmasters’ convention, and through her embarrassing habit of engaging strangers in conversation, she becomes involved with the reluctant Harry Mork (Glenn Ford), an executive of a greeting card firm who has been newly promoted from a travelling salesman and is also en route for New York.

Through a series of misdemeanours, the “friendship” between the two develops, but Evie refuses to believe that Harry is engaged to be married to a widow and has a future stepson (Michael Anderson Jr.)

Finding themselves in the same hotel, Harry finds himself spending his time trying to escape from this unashamedly excited and uninhibitedly friendly woman.

By one of those coincidences, Harry is obliged to leave his suitcase in Evie’s room, and his shrewish fiancee, Phyllis (Angela Lansbury), arrives to find him there.

Geraldine Page won a Golden Globe nomination for her outstanding performance in the film. The title song of the film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.
