Recently-qualified junior barrister Tony Stevens (Michael Craig) is annoyed when he finds his firm is taking on the boss’s niece, Frances Pilbright (Mary Peach).
The two youngsters soon find themselves in court on opposite sides in a case on the restitution of conjugal rights where the plaintiff, Gladys Worthing (Brenda de Banzie) and the defendant Sidney Pudney (Ron Moody), seem to both have things to hide.
Gladys claims to have been married to Sidney during the war before a bomb explosion gave her instant amnesia, and she forgot all about her clownish, crooked husband. Now recovered, Gladys has tracked him down, but he claims not to know her – perhaps due to the presence of his glamorous – if somewhat sozzled – girlfriend (Liz Fraser).
The irascible and rather fearsome judge (James Robertson Justice) has little time for the goings-on, least of all the way the two young lawyers seem rather too keen to squabble with each other.
