San Ferry Ann (1965)

A slapstick comedy without words, this film concerns the adventures of a group of tourists on a holiday to France.

There are Mum (Joan Sims) and Dad (David Lodge), who are travelling in a Dormobile with Grandma (Lynne Carol, famous as Martha Longhurst from Coronation Street) and Grandad (Wilfrid Brambell); two hikers (Barbara Windsor and Ronnie Stevens), overladen with kit and travelling on foot; two young lovers (Rodney Bewes and Catherine Feller) in a sports car; and a young married couple with two sets of twins (Barrie Gosney and Anne Kellett).

Collectively, they survive right-hand drivers, French-speaking gendarmes, elusive campsites, and inflatable igloo tents.

Mum and Dad get tipsy and are embarrassed about undressing on the beach; Grandma makes herself sick with cream pastries; Grandad goes off with a militant, hard-drinking German camper (Ron Moody); the young lovers hardly see daylight, and the hikers set fire to their tent.

These are a few of the incidents in a story that has no end.

The 55-minute film – shot on a shoestring budget in Calais – was distributed in the UK as the supporting feature to Rotten To The Core.
