    Texas Across the River (1966)

    Share
Facebook Twitter Pinterest WhatsApp Reddit Email

This rather amusing Technicolor send-up of Westerns from Universal has beautiful  and genteel southern debutante Phoebe Ann Naylor (Rosemary Forsyth) preparing for her wedding to Spanish aristocrat Don Andrea Baldasar (French star Alain Delon) when a former suitor returns.

Don Andrea and his adversary engage in a duel which ends when the interloping Cavalry officer bends over to pick up his sword and is catapulted over the balcony meeting his demise.

Don Andrea escapes and heads for Texas, pursued by the US Cavalry under the command of Captain Stmipson (Peter Graves) and Lt. Sibley (Andrew Prine).

Along the way he meets lusty and wolfish gunrunner and cattleman Sam Hollis (Dean Martin) and his wisecracking ragtag Indian sidekick, Kronk (Rat Pack comedian Joey Bishop) who are transporting rifles to the town of Mocassin Flats.

The storyline dissolves into a welter of confusion and sight gags and Don Andrea rescues an Indian maiden called Lonetta (Tina Marquand) and they become enamoured.

The Comanches are always threatening to attack the party, saved only by the fact that Chief Iron Jacket (Michael Ansara) keeps giving the assignment to his inept and chicken-hearted son, Yellow Knife (Linden Chiles), provoking much eye-rolling and shrugging from the chief’s war council after each of his son’s failures.

Don Andrea finally ends up competing with Sam when Phoebe eventually shows up.

It’s definitely not politically correct but it’s full of slapstick and great one-liners

Yes, one of the great presenters. R.I.P.

For fans of the radio series Round The Horne (1965 - 1968) - starring the inimitable Kenneth Williams - there are several full episodes on Spotify. Some of the humour is still pretty close to the edge, even by modern standards. Bona!
