Boss Nigger (1975)

Black bounty hunter, Boss (Blaxploitation stalwart Fred Williamson) and his comic-relief sidekick, Amos (D’Urville Martin) ride into a small frightened frontier town out West in pursuit of an outlaw. They discover the town has no sheriff and soon take over that position, much to the chagrin of the mostly white townsfolk.

Much of the film comprises scenes of Boss and Amos humiliating white people while they pursue a criminal named Jed Clayton (William Smith), a standard-issue Western villain who kills for fun and profit.

“Sorry, we can’t stay for supper,” Boss says in a moment indicative of the film’s obviousness, “but we got us mo’ whiteys to catch.”

The wit of the film is in Williamson’s performance in the title role as a strong, two-fisted, gun-toting character who is an immensely self-assured parody of the ‘man with no name’ played by Clint Eastwood in Sergio Leone’s films.

Williamson co-wrote and co-produced the brazenly-titled Western with director Jack Arnold.
