Electric Dreams (1984)

Lenny Von Dohlen plays Miles, a geeky architect who falls hopelessly in love with his neighbour, cellist Madeline (Virginia Madsen), only to discover his rival for her affections is none other than his super-computer (which came to life when champagne is spilt over it!).

Shot by director Steve Barron in the style of a pop promo (unsurprisingly as he had been busy directing music videos for Michael Jackson, The Human League and Tears for Fears), Electric Dreams starts off brightly but ultimately disintegrates.

Packed to the hilt with pop music, and weighed down with MTV-ready montage sequences, it’s a film that it’s difficult to imagine anyone taking too seriously even when it was first released.

It hardly helps matters that the lead character (voiced by Bud Cort) is nothing more than a household appliance.
