Field Of Dreams (1989)

Kevin Costner, as Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella, is the epitome of dignified determination as he accedes to a ghostly voice (“If you build it, he will come”) and turns the field on which his family depends for its livelihood into a baseball pitch.

When the ghost of his late father’s hero – disgraced player “Shoeless” Joe Jackson (Ray Liotta) – appears, Ray embarks on a magical journey of discovery.

Shoeless is joined by seven ghostly teammates. They are the eight members of the Chicago Black Sox who were exiled from baseball after being accused of throwing the 1919 World Series for a bribe.

The underestimated Amy Madigan gives a good account of herself as his trusting but feisty wife, Annie, while Ray Liotta, Burt Lancaster and Frank Whaley represent the spirit world with distinction.

It was also Burt Lancaster’s last cinema film and is a poignant swan song for a true Hollywood great.
