Production of Trail of the Pink Panther commenced two years after the death of Peter Sellers so he appears in archive footage only – both in old footage from all the previous Pink Panther movies and deleted scenes from The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976).
The Pink Panther diamond is stolen once again and the authorities call in Chief Inspector Jacques Clouseau (Peter Sellers) but his plane disappears mysteriously en-route.
Famous French television reporter Marie Jouvet (Joanna Lumley) sets out to solve the mystery by interviewing those connected to Clouseau, including Charles Dreyfus (Herbert Lom); Sir Charles Litton (David Niven) and Lady Simone Litton (Capucine) (an ex-wife of Clouseau); Hercule Lajoy (Graham Stark), George Lytton (Robert Wagner) and Cato (Burt Kwouk) – who all tell of their run-ins with Clouseau.
Each interview comprises clips from the previous Pink Panther movies (including unseen footage).
Marie is kidnapped by mobster Bruno Langois (Robert Loggia) who doesn’t want Clouseau found, but she perseveres and finds Clouseau’s father (Richard Mulligan).
Although marketed as a tribute to the deceased star, Peter Sellers’ widow, Lynne Frederick said this movie insulted the memory of her late husband and won a $1.4 million lawsuit against the makers of the film.
This is one for Pink Panther completists only.
