Willow (1988)

Val Kilmer and Joanne Whalley star in a tale about a baby whose safekeeping will overthrow an evil empire, but they never look comfortable in their roles.

In a world of warriors and witches, fearsome beasts and fantastic beauties, young little folk farmer Willow Ufgood (Warwick Davis) seems an unlikely hero. But destiny demands that he undertake a perilous journey to protect a baby princess and help battle the evil Queen Bavmorda (Jean Marsh) who believes the baby will ultimately usurp her.

Despite the input of Star Wars guru George Lucas, this is a rare misfire from Ron Howard, the former Happy Days star and hit director of Splash (1984), Cocoon (1985) and Apollo 13 (1995).

It’s forced, formulaic and sadly lacking in that sense of magic that’s at the root of all successful fantasy.
