Alex Rogan (Lance Guest) is a bored teenager who lives with his mother and young brother in the remote Starlite Starbrite trailer park and yearns to escape away to college with girlfriend and fellow Starbrite resident Maggie (Catherine Mary Stewart) – but his college loan application has been refused.
Alex consoles himself as usual by playing ‘Starfighter’ – a game in which he is an expert – on the park’s outdoor arcade machine. His prowess at the game is monitored by emissaries from the Star League of the future, who whisk him away to the planet Rylos in a distant galaxy to join the real Star League pilots in the battle against the evil Xur (Norman Snow) and the Kodan Armada.
It’s highly derivative – Star Trek-like aliens have Star Wars-inspired dogfights against a computer-graphic backdrop – but the sensitive love story between Alex and Maggie cuts through the cuteness and gives the intergalactic adventures a much-needed boost.
Children will love it, especially the fun moments with Guest’s android double.
