Beautiful fashion model Anne Linton (Anne Aubrey) is an unmarried, expectant mother. She is helped by shy, self-conscious student doctor Dickie Bird (Anthony Newley), who has become a temporary laundry lorry driver so he can meet people and gain some self-confidence.
Aided by his wacky chum, Bernie (comedian Bernie Winters), Dickie sets Anne up in a boarding house run by garrulous old Mrs O’Grady (Hermione Baddeley), and finds her a job at the laundry.
Before long, everyone believes Dickie is responsible for Anne’s condition, and they make a marriage of convenience.
Anne is angered when Dickie cannot muster enough courage to approach the hospital Dean (John Le Mesurier) about resuming his medical work, but when she goes into labour unexpectedly while visiting a farm, Dickie safely delivers the baby and learns that Anne truly loves him.
The police, fire brigade and RAF are alerted, giving a showman-like touch to the finale.
Let’s Get Married has a go at everything from slapstick knockabout comedy to genuine romance, music and song, and Newley and Aubrey are delightful. A little of Bernie Winters goes a long way.
