The joint US/British space shuttle Churchill is sent to observe Halley’s Comet under the command of Colonel Tom Carlsen (Steve Railsback).
While investigating the comet, Carlsen and his team find the naked forms of three humanoid life forms encased in crystal coffin-like containers – one of them a beautiful young female (Mathilda May) – and return them to the Churchill.
Meanwhile, the European Space Research Centre in London loses contact with the shuttle and sends the shuttle Columbia to investigate. They find the crew dead, the Churchill gutted by fire, and an escape pod missing.
When the humanoids are taken back to Earth, Dr Hans Fallada (Frank Finlay) and his team discover they are space vampires who drain the life force from their victims, transforming them into zombies.
Soon, all of London is reeling, and NATO forces threaten to blow the city to smithereens to save the Earth. Meanwhile, the escape pod from the Churchill is recovered in the USA and is found to contain Colonel Tom Carlsen, who claims to be in telepathic contact with the missing female alien.
Based on the Colin WIlson novel Space Vampires, the $25 million film combines elements of such low-budget classics as Planet of the Vampires (1965) and Quatermass and The Pit (1967).
