Fresh out of British prison, Cockney career criminal Dave Wilson (Terence Stamp) heads to Los Angeles when he learns that his young adult daughter Jennifer (Australian actress Melissa George), an aspiring actress, died in an accident there, when her car careened over a cliff and crashed in a fiery blaze.
Wilson is convinced that Jennifer’s death was not accidental.
Obtaining information from Jennifer’s friends Ed (Luis Guzmán) and Elaine (Lesley Ann Warren), Wilson learns more about his daughter’s life in Los Angeles and becomes certain that the person behind her death is the wealthy older man she had been living with, rock music promoter Terry Valentine (Peter Fonda).
There follows a battle of wits between Wilson and Valentine, who is protected by his security consultant, Jim Avery (Barry Newman).
The film doesn’t reveal its secrets until the very end, and when the answers come, they are a jolt.
Footage from Stamp’s 1967 film Poor Cow (Ken Loach’s directorial debut) features in flashbacks of Wilson with his baby daughter and wife.
