When two of his female patients die, plastic surgeon Doctor Larry Roberts (Albert Finney) is the chief suspect. Yet as he attempts to find the real killers, he comes up against a sinister corporation.
Way before he cloned dinosaurs in Jurassic Park (1993), writer/director Michael Crichton played with similar themes for this underrated blend of techno-horror and suspense.
It’s a slick science-fiction outing about subliminal advertising, in which Dr Roberts joins pin-up Cindy Fairmont (Partridge Family star Susan Dey) to investigate the deaths of his supermodel clients and their association with advertising agency chief John Reston (James Coburn).
Although it’s confusing at times, the design is fabulous, the time-continuum blaster gizmo is a brilliant device allowing Crichton to indulge in some great visual effects and the acting, from Finney especially, is outstanding. Former Playboy Playmates such as Terri Welles and Ashley Cox turn up as the models.
NB: The title, Looker, is an acronym for Light Ocular-Oriented Kinetic Emotive Responses.
